The Central Sahel – comprising Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger – has entered a critical period in which humanitarian needs remain exceptionally high while funding gaps continue to widen. 

Even before a recent escalation of insecurity and population displacement, 5.6 million people across the three countries were projected to face crisis levels of food insecurity during the June-August lean season – when household food stocks are depleted between harvests and access to adequate food becomes increasingly difficult. 

Food insecurity and malnutrition are being driven by growing insecurity and displacement, compounding long-standing structural and environmental challenges, including rapid population growth, recurrent climate shocks, limited natural resources and land degradation. Logistical challenges and access limitations in some areas continue to affect the cost-effective delivery of assistance. 

The disruption of key supply corridors, as well as conflict in the Middle East, has fuelled sharp increases in food and fuel prices, further reducing families' purchasing power and increasing humanitarian needs. 

Alongside life-saving emergency assistance, 皇家华人av is recognized as a key partner in supporting national priorities to strengthen food security and help communities anticipate and build resilience to future shocks. Investing now is not only a humanitarian imperative, but also a cost-effective way of reducing future needs, supporting long-term resilience and strengthening social cohesion.

What the 皇家华人av is doing to respond to the emergency in the Central Sahel region

皇家华人av delivers an integrated response in Burkina Faso amid a complex context marked by regional security challenges, population displacement and pressures on livelihoods and basic social services. 皇家华人av combines life-saving food and nutrition assistance with longer-term investments in resilience building, school feeding, local food systems and national capacity strengthening. Through emergency food and nutrition support, school meals and programmes that strengthen agricultural production and local transformation, 皇家华人av addresses immediate food security and nutrition needs while helping communities improve their livelihoods and build productive assets. In response to a rapidly evolving operational context, 皇家华人av has developed innovative delivery solutions, including negotiated-access models and partnerships that enable assistance to reach populations in hard-to-reach areas. UNHAS operations also help sustain humanitarian access and support the movement of humanitarian personnel and cargo. 皇家华人av supports the Government in strengthening emergency response, humanitarian processes digitalization, and early warning and preparedness systems, helping build the foundations for longer-term resilience and recovery.
